Quick Overview

  • Made from recycled industrial artifacts from the the early 1960s
  • Measures 15 minutes of time
  • Made in the United Kingdom
  • Hand-blown glass

This 15 minute timer is made of recycled industrial artifacts dating back to the 1960's. The timer is composed of antique wood spools found in abandoned textile mills in England. The spools were used to hold thread, cotton, and yarn that were spun into fabric. This particular timer was a ""tumbler"" and was used as a roller. Yarn passed between these rollers to be pressed and controlled before it was spun into fabric. The tumblers came from Joseph Lumb at Folly Hall Mill, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, which closed around 1969. A vintage thread spool sticker is placed on the base to give it even more character.

As with all antique and hand-made items, the colors and decorations vary from piece to piece. We consider this to be a special part of their history and character.

Beautiful and works well - one unexpected style difference

This is a lovely hourglass and does seem to be made of recycled materials, which is very cool. It works well and has a lovely sound when you flip it and the first few grains hit the glass. The one surprise was that the hourglass shipped with the glass and frame separate. That's a great idea to protect the glass. However, the pillars are set so that you press the glass into place. I.e., there is a gap in one side of the pillars wide enough to fit the glass through. This makes it easy to press the glass into place (and there are nice rubber holders on both sides to make the fit very snug) but it also means the glass can fall or be knocked back out of that side. I would have preferred it if the pillars were set equally apart, even if that meant I had to screw the frame together around the glass. That way, there would be no chance for the glass to be knocked back out.

Best work timer

My partner has ADHD and it’s easier for her to work with a 15min goal. This will make a great Christmas gift.

Returned item

I returned this item as I was disappointed with the quality: the glass portion was loose even after pushing in the end corks as instructed by customer service, one end (top/bottom) looked unfinished and different from the other end, and the wood pieces did not have a lustrous finish as the photo suggests. I returned it within 48 hours nearly three weeks ago and have not been credited or contacted as yet. I liked the idea of this piece and also wish it would come with a description as it might have made a nice gift.

Very satisfied with this hourglass. I have several of the old bobbin hourglasses and this one is my favorite. Would recommend to anyone looking for something nostalgic to add to there decor or as a gift.
