I was looking for something attractive and out of the ordinary to add to my living room decor. But I was also looking for something American Made, because I am sick of everything indicating Made in China. I paid a lot more for this one than I would have paid for something made elsewhere, but fortunately I am in a position where I can "put my money where my mouth is" as we say around, when it comes to buying American Made. I experienced what I thought was an issue with it...occasionally not all of the sand will fall to the bottom half of the globe. I emailed customer service and got a prompt, friendly, courteous reply, telling me that the static electricity in homes during the cold, dry winter months could cause that, and I should wait until after winter to see if it resolves itself. If it doesn't they will send me a replacement globe. So that's what I'm doing...not very patiently waiting for spring time when I can turn off the heat, open the windows, and enjoy the fresh air...and hopefully free-flowing sand from the top half to the bottom half of the globe.
My wife said what she really wants for her birthday is more time; so I thought of buying her an hourglass. We drove up to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada for her birthday and when she opened the present she was delighted with laughter upon unwrapping the hourglass. She really likes her "Time in a bottle". The craftsmanship of the zebra wood was greatly to her liking.
I purchased this to remind me of how precious our time is. Nearing the end of my life, I find myself spending time on pointless activities (worry about election, spending time on twitter, etc). Turning the hourglass reminds me to spend my time on what is most important (such as playing with my dogs, playing the piano).

I bought this for my boyfriend and had both sides engraved. The quality of the wood is excellent and the metal spindles make it spacious and brings your focus to the bulbs and sand.
