This 30 minute hourglass is a true collectors model that can be displayed as your desk accessory or table centerpiece in your home or office. Brass timer on sturdy, attractive. distressed wood stand. Colors are bronze and brown.
18th C. industrial design, bronze and wood. Collectable because of their combined historical and practical value. Some glasses measured up to two hours, used at a time when church pews were designed by the Inquisition to torture the human back. Ships' hourglasses were calibrated to the half hour of the ship’s watch, and if the helmsman didn’t turn the glass too early it actually doubled in defining longitude. Navigators tried to keep count of the hours: the galleons wrecked on the Western Australian reefs remind us of the perils of incorrectly kept time. To appreciate the important symbolism of the hourglass look at Renaissance painted still lifes, also called vanitas, filled with symbolism and morals. They very often depict hourglasses.
I purchased this 30 minute timer for my boss. I joked he could use it to keep those impromptu meetings short! He loved it. My only suggestion is not on the product but for the website. I would have loved to have included information with the gift on the history of hourglasses or even how these are made but in a nice easy to read format. I was hoping a note came with the product but since it doesn't I looked all over the site and did not find anything. Please add a page with details explaining the craftmanship and work involved to make these beautiful hourglasses or even something on the wood or materials used for bases. Many people don't know how these are made and a story would have added value to the gift.
Perfect in every way.
Didn't feel it was as quality as it should be for the price... felt kind of tacky. Maybe it was just the model I got.
Well made and sturdy with nice compact heft. Bought two and both within a minute of 30 minutes.
I got this for my husband, he was a aircraft Naval navigator for almost 30 years and on an aircraft carrier for a lot of his life. I was drawn to the story of the hourglass being used for navigation in ships. My husband was overwhelmed by this gift. I only wish they had included the story for my husband to read. I had to read it to him but if he could have read it upon opening it, it would have been more meaningful. Great quality and fabulous gift!
